About Pet Insurance Guide

Hi, I'm Sarah Mitchell. I live in the Portland, Oregon area with my two dogs and a cat, and I've been a pet owner pretty much my entire life. I started Pet Insurance Guide in 2023 after spending way too many hours trying to figure out pet insurance on my own and realizing there wasn't a single place that laid everything out in plain English.

The short version of why this site exists: my golden retriever, Benny, ate something he shouldn't have on a hiking trail near Forest Park. Emergency surgery, two nights at the animal hospital, and a bill for $4,800. I had insurance at the time, but the wrong kind. My policy had a per-incident cap that barely covered half. That was the wake-up call.

I'd had pets since I was a kid growing up outside of Eugene. My family always had dogs, usually mutts from the local shelter. My first cat, a tabby named Pickles, came along when I was in college. After Pickles, I adopted a Maine Coon mix named Olive who lived to be 17. These days it's Benny (the golden), a rescue mutt named Juniper, and a calico cat named Noodle.

Why I Built This Site

After Benny's surgery, I spent weeks comparing pet insurance policies. I called providers, read the fine print on exclusions, and talked to other pet owners about their experiences. What I found was that most of the information online was either written by insurance companies trying to sell you something, or it was so generic it wasn't actually helpful.

I wanted to create something different. A site where real coverage details, actual costs, and honest opinions about different policy types were all in one place. No affiliate rankings disguised as reviews. Just the information I wish I'd had before I picked the wrong policy for Benny.

My Insurance History

Over 12 years, I've had policies with four different pet insurance providers. I've filed claims for everything from routine dental cleanings to that emergency surgery. I've dealt with claim denials, waiting period surprises, and the headache of switching providers mid-policy. Every one of those experiences ended up as a lesson that I try to share here.

With Olive, my Maine Coon, I didn't get insurance until she was 8. By then, her kidney issues were considered pre-existing. That cost me thousands out of pocket over her last few years. With Juniper, I signed up for coverage the week I brought her home. Totally different experience when she needed knee surgery last year.

What You'll Find Here

This site covers pet insurance for dogs, cats, birds, and small pets like rabbits and guinea pigs. I write about specific breeds because insurance costs and coverage needs vary a lot depending on what kind of pet you have. A French Bulldog and a Labrador have completely different health risk profiles, and your insurance should reflect that.

Breed-Specific Guides

Each breed guide covers the health issues that breed is prone to, what those conditions typically cost to treat, and what kind of insurance coverage makes sense. I pull from veterinary data, breeder resources, and conversations with other owners to put these together.

Coverage Comparisons and Cost Breakdowns

I break down how different policy types work, what deductibles actually mean for your wallet, and when accident-only coverage might make more sense than a comprehensive plan. I try to include real dollar amounts wherever I can because vague advice like "it depends" doesn't help anyone.

Location-Specific Information

Vet costs vary a lot depending on where you live. A routine visit in Portland costs differently than one in Nashville or Chicago. I've started adding location guides for cities where I have enough data to be useful.

A Few Things to Know

I'm a pet owner, not a veterinarian or a licensed insurance agent. The information on this site comes from my personal experience, research, and conversations with other pet owners and professionals. I do my best to keep everything accurate and up to date, but you should always talk to your vet about health questions and read the actual policy documents before buying insurance.

If you have questions or want to share your own experience, feel free to reach out through the contact page. I read every message, even if it takes me a bit to respond.
